What does this message mean?

Is the 'picture' topic starting to have an effect? Should we start deleting some pictures?

On the picture topic we don't use attachments for the pictures.....but the link to the site which they are on means that it does not take up any space on the forum server even though the pictures show here as if they are on this site.

Are you quite sure? I would have thought that If I can see a picture on the Forum, it is taking up attachment space. :o?

Umm - I think we DO store attachments. And yes, some sort of limit has been reached.

I'll investigate what the message means sometime today.

Yes Alan you are correct Attachments are stored on the server but links using the Img function just make a link to where the image is stored on the original server.

For example if I upload a picture to say for example Photobucket and the use the Img link when the post is viewed here it links to the image on photo bucket even though this image is not on the HOC forum server.
Photos shown in this way are not attachments ;o)

Agreed - but there is the facility to upload your pictures onto this board.

It appears we have been given 50Mb to play with and have used it up. I need to find out if it is possible to increase that limit or we need to start getting pics deleted (or disable that facility and use imgs instead.

Deleting old pics is going to be a lot of work going through old posts and may not be that easy deciding what to keep and what to delete.

I started using the Img function for the last pics in my side panel repair posts after recieving the message Attachment Quota has been reached

The dis-advantage with using IMG is if the host site closes the pics go with it although with host sites such as Photobucket this is unlikely that they will close.

What is the possibibility of really old posts being archived?

No idea. If I'd known we had such a small limit, I might have done something before now. As it is, there's 277 pictures to look at and try and delete.....

If you are refering to the picture association game there is no need to delete anything from there as the pics are not attachments.

Deleting attachments from other posts would not be a problem if they are old or not relevant anymore.

@ Alan I would be prepared if required to go through my old posts and change the pics from attachments to IMG.

Witch - that would be a good start - thanks.

If I could work out how to disable picture uploads I would do it. But I can't find out how and the forum owners seem to be on holiday.

When you post a reply to any topic and also in PMs at the bottom of the text window are two tabs from the pane below.

Using the upload attachment tab, files can be uploaded to the Hosts server, the hosts will have set a limited amount of memory aside, which may be increased (usually at a cost).
As WitchMaster says, the images in the pictures game should take up no board memory (other than the text used for their address)... Unless people have uploaded them to the forum then used them in the game.

Somewhere in the Admin, I would expect to find a section to admin those uploaded files, its a few months since I deforumed my own website and can't quite remember what goes where within the Admin section.

There's a little information about administration of the attachments here Alan, including how to prevent uploads. but I cant find anything about deletion or removal, I can only find that option in an individuals 'User control panel' so you may have to do it from there.

Unfortunately, the forum owners have not let me change that setting. So I can't disable the upload of attachments.

I'm about to go on holiday so it will have to wait until I get back (unless Stritchy wants to sort it out)
