On various bike forums I regularly come across the subject of punctures.
Riders all have their own method - Ultraseal, plugs - mushroom/string, AA/RAC.
There is a lot of urban myths flying about. The tyre manufacturers and the tyre shops, all have a vested interest in selling new tyres and are subject to liability conditions laid down by their various insurance companies
Too often advice is based upon what is good for those selling tyres and the insurance companies and not really taking the rider and his/her needs into account.
We all know that the ultimate answer is a new tyre, but it can be a very time wasting and expensive business - especially if on tour. You could find yourself stuck somewhere you would rather not be for 48 hrs., and having to fork out cash, not only on a new tyre but overnight accommodation.
If you get the side wall slashed or ruptured, hard luck - it will be a new tyre!
But most punctures are in the tread area of the tyre and are normally small holes. These can be resolved both by Ultraseal and plugs.
It seems to me that many riders have been frightened off of Ultraseal and plugs. I was thinking it would be an idea if a Branch - or HOC-GB - was to organise a demonstration, both of Ultraseal and plugs. Not on a wheel, like at some of the shows, but actually on riders bikes.
Ask members who are riding with either a tyre fixed by Ultraseal or plugs to come along, to show members. Have a tyre available for members to practice putting in their own plug. Have a tyre that had been Ultrasealed, so members could see how it distributes round the tyre.
The HOC-GB, would not incur any liability, they would just be demonstrating the alternatives and leaving it to members to make up their own minds.
Perhaps at the next HOC-GB Show day?
