tom tom rider

Postby skin flint on Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:29 pm

I got my GPS from Aldi - it's a median and came with a bike mounting kit and "waterproof" case.

The case keeps the rain off, but it is so shiny and reflective that you can't see the screen, so I don't bother with it.

It cost about £130 and came with full UK maps and all major roads in Europe.

In the UK it works fine, but make sure you get the maps you want - major roads mean exactly that.

In Belgium last year, I was trying to find our hotel and was sitting in the middle of a white screen for hours wishing I had spent a bit more for the maps.

Also needed to but a cheap bracket on the internet to avoid covering the
ignition key hole.

I have seen both Garmin and Tom Tom units used perfectly well in Europe and each owner says theirs is the best, so happy Biking with whatever you get.

Hiya skin.

Nice helpful, informative and sensible first post. I'm not sure that you are going to fit in here. :D

Seriously, I see that you put "waterproof" in inverted commas. That gave me a chuckle because I know exactly what you mean. I go around horsey type shops with my wife and camping/hiking shops with my lad and they all announce that their gear is waterproof. Well, it might be at walking pace, or even on horseback, but it certainly isn't at 120mph on the M11. Believe me, I know these things! :D

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the forum and look forward to seeing more posts from you.

Regards - John

Chris

Gold wings have optimistic speedos otherwise you would get nicked at such an illegal speed.

The're watching!

Chris, you're right about Lincolnshire, but the M11 doesn't go that far north, and I would hesitate about doing it on the A1. :D

Charlie, the Wing runs out of breath at 126mph downhill with a tailwind. That's gps speed not Honda mph, which is about eight per cent lower than actual. :(

Anyway, once is enough. To be honest, I didn't much enjoy it, but these things have to be tried once.

Right choice

Postby nik6282 on Sat Dec 16, 2006 1:42 pm

Thanks guys, your infor is very helpful.

I have been looking more and more for the devices. Yes Garmin is offerening better functionality, but TomTom offers better price 250 compare 600 for Garmin, make choice much easier.

My wife bought a nice Garmin unit for her car, it was more accurate than some of the Tom Tom offerings, which apparently tell you to turn just as you pass the junction. Her unit, I can't remember the model number, was under £300 but I think you can get it for around £250 now. It was very useful on my recent business trip to Ireland as I didn't know where I was going in the hire car.

G.P.S.

Postby john on Mon Dec 18, 2006 6:22 pm

Have been useing a Garmin Quest for several years. Waking,Cycles,Motorcycles and dare i say it. my rep mobile. That means in the region of 100,000 miles.

I bought this version for all the above reasons and by having linked to the autocom means my Female(sorry Barry)pillion can help with directions, phone calls or the two way radio on group(Barry)riding.

I still spend hours scanning over proper maps for planning the best 2 wheel routes.

I have thought about the latest version as it has the the post code option.

Hey Nik..
I did 3,000 miles through France and Spain last summer.. no GPS.. just paper maps.. more fun entirely! i got lost a few times as well.. EVEN MORE FUN!
Do you really want to join the car driving "Muppetts" that we see with their silly digital displays telling them where to go on .. even on their daily commute to work? (even though they know exactly where they are and where they are going?)
GPS is the latest "craze" ie.. everyone must have one.. (like mobile phones) dont be suckered into it.. WE ARE BIKERS! we dont need a silly electronic voice to tell us where to go.. do we? I for one hate GPS... its another product of 21st century big brother technology... "I MUST HAVE CRAP" (cuz everyone else has)
get a good waterproof map, stick it in your tankbag ...and just go.. get lost a few times too.. but above all enjoy the freedom of all!
for gods sake dont become another Muppett

Having done tens of thousands of miles in 20 years of continental touring - one trip alone was 9000 miles - mostly using paper maps. For three years I have been using a Garmin 2610 GPS. All I can say is that it has increased my enjoyment no end.

I still buy a local map as soon as possible on entering an area or country - to get the latest edition - it does help to see the broader picture. I also pick up maps and leaflets from local tourist offices, but I would not be without my GPS.

You guessed it Chris! I always end up scouring the web for something interesting, anything to avoid watching the bloody 'idiots lantern' as my old Dad used to call it!

Just had a look at talkingbikes.com, not bad.

Why dont you start a section for links to interesting sites? It would keep me busy for an evening.

Regards, Alan
