Good luck with the VF500, they were pretty little bikes. Quite fancied one at the time but eventually picked up an NC30.

Finding a good engine is very difficult nowadays, unfortunately they weren't the most reliable Honda built.

The cams weren't the problem on the 500, however the cam chain tensioners failed as did many cranks resulting in a lot of scrap engines. They only put the problem to bed with the redesigned VFR400 and 750 engines.

Nice bike, and good luck with the restoration. I've got the FII, but haven't ridden it for years.

Cams weren't normally a problem unless oil changes were neglected. The oil feed to the cams was marginal, so any build up in the feed pipes starved the cams with terminal results.

Chimpy is spot on with crank and cam tensioner problems, but they also had a bit of an issue with conrods from memory.

Still a pretty little bike though..

Nice job! I like reading stuff like this. You may wanna consider using a Blog to record your work - it's far easier and more user-friendly than using photobucket / flickr.

I started on for my 250 refurb... http://cb250n.blogspot.com

I love those bikes, I had a "D" reg VF500FII back in 1988 .

My mate "spud" and I both had RD250LC's before and would race around Plymouth .He moved onto a VF500 and I went for a GPz550.

Having blown up the GPz :o0 ,I followed "spuds" advice and got myself a "D" reg VF500FII - a beautiful bike and much nicer to ride than the GPz.

You're doing a great job there mate.Bit of an old cliche but it's true; you don't see many of them riding about these days. ;o)
Honda CB750 for commuting, Sinclair C5's for an escape from reality !
