newbie trying to fit heated grips not easy please help :o?

Postby TAFF8269 on Mon Jan 05, 2009 5:00 pm

I bought a set of oxford heated grips and according to the instructions they can be run fresh of the battery, so i wired them up an hey presto nothing! now my old man says that its probably due to the fact that its a regulated battery an therefore isnt kicking out enough power  the book says it may need more than 12v to warm up, yet my battery only runs 12.4 (according to the battery side) i have just bought my cbr 600 rr3 and as yet dont have the knowledge to sort this. Is there a way of running it from before the regulator? does it even have one? should i just go to the garage? please help soon as i may have to take them back, thanks alot for any help in advance

Oxford grips work straight off the battery I know I have had two sets on the last two bikes. Have you got the set with variable heat setting (dial switch) or the just on off set (simple flip switch)? Ceheck the in line fuse is OK. They take a little while to warm up fully---- about 5 minutes from cold, you should be able to feel them warming after about a minute.
If still not warming up check all connectors are pushed in fully. Failing that it sounds like a duff set of grips.

when you have got them working correctly from battery you need to turn them on and off with ign switch.so you dont leave them on when leaving bike,or kids come along and turn them on.this is easy earth out on frame, but positive put on front brake light switch feed wire.

Modern Oxford heated grips will not work unless the engine is running and producing 13-14v. So, you can wire them straight into the battery.

alan just so I understand this, the grips WILL work off the battery, however the engine has to be running to get the required 13V+, and so with the engine switched off the power to the grips is interupted.

Dont know if you`v fixed your heated grips but i had the same problem with the set i bought they just would`nt work,so after nearly throwing them in the bin i started again from scratch and found the plug that connects the battery to the control unit had a faulty connection. When the two halves of the plug were pushed together one of the metal contacts was being pushed out and not connecting. These are only held in by a prong on the contact, mine was flat, so it only required bending out and problem solved. By the way these grips work directly off the battery and so long as you have a good one there should be no probs but its best if the engine is running so you dont run it too low . The grips also have built in protection so if you do leave them on they will turn off automaticallly when the battery falls to a certain voltage ( so you can still start the bike). Anyway sorry to go on a bit but i hope this helps,Regards Gaz.
