Did you know - BBC iPlayer

Postby alansh on Sat Nov 01, 2008 11:40 am

Did you know that the BBC iPlayer uses P2P technology to get the programs you want to watch - and that it uses YOUR computer to share it out again? And that you cannot turn it off?

No? Neither did I until I wondered why my disk drives were hammering (C: running at 99%) and my network running when I wasn't doing anything. So, I investigated and found a nasty little program called Kservice from Kontiki running away. A bit of internet checking and I found all about it.

So, I have uninstalled iPlayer and the whole system is much quieter and more responsive now.

If you feel your system should be running faster, check out if you have iPLayer loaded (also called BBC Dowload Manager). If so, get rid of it.

Blo**dy hell Alan, I didn't realise that.

Sometimes I sit here and wonder why my PC is churning away while I'm not doing anything!

I use BBC iPlayer and Download Manager to watch stuff (I don't watch much "live" TV)

I removed those services a while back, although I hadn't noticed any unusual activity on the PC.

I just watch the things from the webpage instead.

Cheeky buggers though!! :o0

You can quit the services in the Task Manager and continue to use iPlayer for streaming - just not downloading for later.

Suits me!
