Fake pound coins

Postby al-n-di on Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:16 pm

Have you noticed how many are around? I had four pounds change today at a gas station and two of them were slugs! I read an article some time ago about the high percentage of fake quids around but it does seem that it is a high percentage, I've had loads.

Check your change now, I bet everyone has at least one, they are easy to spot as the knurling around the edge is usually very poor as are the images and they are just poor all over really, it looks like the police are beaten on this one.

When I gave them back to the assistant at the gas station, he just gave me two more and tossed the slugs back in the till, so some other poor sod will get them, who cares?

Yep, had plenty of them. All the fake ones I've had were a slightly different colour too, paler, but genuine ones can be too!
The fakes I've had have also always been of the earlier 'British' design, and not any of the later 'English', 'Scottish', 'Welsh' or 'Northern Ireland' versions. The wording around the rim is extremely poorly executed, and of a different font and size to the genuine items. And they look rather rough as if the tool to mint them is worn out.
The figure was belived to be 2% are fake, about £30m !
I don't think traders care, as they never study the pound coins you give them before they put them in the till, but it's actually a crime to use them, either way!

You don't really notice them until you put them in a machine and it spits them out. When you inspect them they are normally quite rounded and the definition is poor. There certainley are plenty of them around though. I wonder why people bother to make them as the profit margin must be very small compared to other scams.

Thats what I thought, why bother for a quid? But I guess if you have the machinery set up, the overheads are very low and the profit margin is right up there, if you could make 200 a day not bad schmutter my boy. How do they get them in the system though? Beats me, I would never make a crook, I'm too busy earning a living to make money, legal or otherwise!

with the euro the coins are not forged but most shops wont accept 100 euro notes for part payment where they must give change ...

getting them into the system is extremely easy...
there is a supply and demand...if someone offered you £100 of coins for £30 in notes .....and you shall we say were of the hard up variety.....you'd bite me hand orf...

and then they are normally filtered into the system by market traders or fair ground stalls... seems that's where i find them to be mostly....
( not in anyway saying these people are crooks...oh no!....)

you get me drift!
are you going to eat it or can i?

There a a few ways. Around the edge is poorly finished, like doesn't have writing in and to many lines...so its easy to feel for a fake. Also th epictures on either side may not match up directly.
And try them in a new vending machine...if it rejects it all the time then its most likely fake.

:o)
