unusual CB400

Postby kevinsinden on Wed May 20, 2009 5:16 pm

Hi to all

Ive been given a CB400 to restore and am trying to find the history of the bike before i undergo the restoration as i want the bike to be true to it's original.

The bike has the model number of CB400 PA - 5DK (built late 70's). i understand that the bike is ex military / police. it was used in the Caribbean before being brought back here, stored and then given to me. I am new to the bike scene so would appreciate any info any of you may have or contacts that may help.

P.S. any usful tips to aid my project would also be welcomed, i know the last owner had a job to fit the triple trees to the frame they gave up at this point. so any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Kevin, and welcome :welcome ! First of all, where is "here"? You have not set up in your details which country you are located in (We have Canadians, Australians and Americans on this forum, as well as us in the UK) and your use of the term "triple trees" suggests you are not in the UK ! (We usually call them "yokes".)
Is it a twin or a four cylinder model? The model designation you quote is not familiar to me, so it may have been a model specifically for one customer, as you say, police or military. A photo would useful if anyone is likely to assist you.

Well it is a 2 cylinder model ... it says twin on the side panel. I am not familiar with the model but it looks very similar to the CM250T rather than the super dreams od around the same period.

It was a police spec model based on the CB400T or Hawk as it was known Stateside.

Yes, it related to the CB400T, but the tank is the shape of that fitted to the CB400AT, the 2-speed automatic version that was available for a period here. Unless it is all there, I think you may have some difficulty finding certain parts if you want to restore it to "original". The mechanical side will probably not be a problem, but the police-specific cosmetic parts will be almost impossible to find.

many thanks for all the kind help, I went up to the garage for the first time today and found a lot of spares too, so hopfully it will be complete. also hidden up their was a manual for ordering spare parts for the CB400 PA which is ace. good news is their is a brand new engine, 4 new wheels (front and back) 8 brand new exhasts a large nox of what looks like police parifinalia. Woo. so if anyone wants any spares i will have a fair few around. a few items are missing, front calipers for one but all the extra police tins seem to be their so im happy with that.
