New Build

Postby Chimp Boy on Sat Jul 19, 2008 10:39 am

As some of you know I'm currently building up a new bike :o)) . The bike will be pretty much custom built and is not a restoration job or really a replica of something else. However it does have a theme. I am fully documenting the build and I will post this on my website when it is finished. Some assemblies are coming together now so I'll give you all taster as it happens.

Here are the finished front forks.

The forks have had a total strip down, resprayed lowers, new seals and springs and fresh oil.

As it progresses I'll add a few more pictures.

Looks good. So, what is the theme? 1952 BSA Gold Star monkey bike?

Well not quite Barry, but close.

It's not a Monkey bike but it will be along the lines of a 1960s Honda racer albeit with a single cylinder engine (but not quite 350 or 500cc).

I thought about rebuilding my 350 four into a replica racer but as it's not far off standard spec (apart from the very rare 4-4 exhausts) I decided against it. Then again I could have gone all the way and built a CBX powered RC166 replica, if I'd had the time and money.

I haven't made a great deal of progress with this bike lately as I have been busy with my other steeds and weekend events. However I have been picking up parts (from all over the world) and things will soon begin to take shape, especially as the weather is turning which we allow me more time in the workshop.

After doing a little more research, I have found that the fork lowers should really be black and not silver  , so these have been refinished and are looking fine. I have also sourced some nice lightweight NSR125 alloy clip ons but as these were made to suit 32mm diameter forks I've had to machine some reducers to allow them to be fitted to the 25mm forks that I'm using. The reducers are also stepped to allow the Takegawa 27mm headlamp brackets to fit as well. The headlamp arrangement may well change if I decide to fit a full 1960s style fairing to the bike (I would like to) but initially the bike will be built naked.

The next step is to obtain a wiring loom to allow the electrical components to be fitted on the frame. Once all the holes have been drilled and brackets welded on the frame it can then be powder coated.

I already have a running engine and both wheels for the initial build are shod with tyres and ready to roll so it should come together quite quickly.

Some more pictures will follow soon.

Here are the NSR125 clip ons, resprayed black.

These are the reducers that I've machined to mate the clip ons to the fork legs. The smaller diameter is where the headlamp brackets will clamp.

I hope to get the wiring loom fitted to the frame soon so that I can mount up all the ancilliary bits. Once that is done I can send the frame and swing arm off for powder coating.
