Re-Jetting a carb

Postby Rolyin on Mon Jul 07, 2008 9:49 pm

Hi,
I have had a post about making my xr125 faster, so I am finally accepting that its never going to be a cbr1000 I have decided to try and change to a K&N air filter (model RC-2290), the kind people at K&N also informed me that if I put this onto my bike I would need to rejet the carb, so I was wondering how I would go about this and where I would get the parts (I live inw arrington if you know any local shops).
Thanks

I presume it's a Keihin carb on the XR.

You can try http://www.allensperformance.co.uk/ . They are in Nottinghamshire, I use them for all my Keihin jetting requirements.

You will have to remove the float bowl and remove the main jet. You will need to check the size that's stamped on it. It will be something like 95 or 100. Get jets one and two sizes up from whatever it is, the guys at Allens will be able to advise.

OK, try 98 and 100 main jets. I'd start with the 100 and take the bike for a blast down the dual carriageway flat out at 62MPH. When you near a lay by hit the kill switch, pull the clutch in and coast to a halt. Have a look at the spark plug, it should be a nice greyish light brown colour. If it's sooty try the 98 jet and repeat the process.

You'll need to talk to them, I've always found them pretty helpfull. I don't know of any other places that have such extensive stocks of Keihin parts.

If you change the carb for something else, it will also require correctly setting up (jetting).

It might be worth you taking your bike to a rolling road and let them sort the jetting out for you.
