How to Fit a Centre Stand Bracket?

Postby Tidy CB TwoFifty on Sun Feb 07, 2010 1:12 am

Using the picture below (or using your motorbike knowledge), can anybody tell me where I hook the centre stand bracket (the crescent moon shaped thing) onto the underside of the bike?

I was thinking it may go somewhere near the hexagonal nut but there isn't a hook there, nor was the nut undone in order to remove this bracket.

The bracket actually broke off due to corrosion but I have a new replacement. The bike is a Honda CB Two Fifty.

From what I remember from my CB200 (which, while not a similar bike, was, as with lots of Hondas, put together in a similar way), you have the part you are holding (called a 'spring hook') 180 degrees out. It should loop over the stand pivot or stand (just above where your thumb is in the photo). But I think I can just make out evidence of where the hooks inside curve would have rubbed against the stand itself. Hook it over the stand pivot, and you may see there's probably a boss on the frame, facing out, which you slip the large hole in the hook onto, then slide it so it can't come off. At least, that's how my CB200 was, so I expect your 250 will be somewhat similar.
It looks like the spring hook has actually worn, rather than corroded, as even though it's not round when new, the hole in yours is very much elongated.

BTW, you need a new chain!

Hi, thanks for your help, I managed to successfully locate the boss up near the pivot as you mentioned. And there was me thinking I might have to take it to a dealer to get it done... Once I found the boss, the next difficulty I came across was trying to hook that mega tough spring back onto the centre stand. I got there eventually though with a bit of technique and a bit of elbow grease!

On the subject of the chain though, don't you think it just needs a bit more oil? I re-tensioned it yesterday and it still has a bit of life left in it according to the wear marker on the swingarm.

There is a handy tip about spring stretching in the hints and tips section.

Glad you did it OK.

The chain looks as rusty as f**k  , and it looks like you may have at least one link seized. You've obviously not maintained the chain that well, have you? ;o) The chain wear indicators merely give you a guide as to how worn the chain is, not it's overall condition. Seized links will give a false impression too. If is was mine, I'd change it, but then I'd have looked after it better in the first place! You need to clean chain occasionally, not just keep chucking oil on it. Looks like a clean of the bike wouldn't go amiss either!

There appears to be a lot of surface corrosion on the underside of this bike and the chain doesn't look like it's been turned for a while suggesting the bike has been stood. It's possible that this chain is ok and just needs a good clean and lubricating, conversley it may well be knackered. One thing is for sure and that is it needs investigating.
