cb500/4 front end stuff

Postby Backwards Traveller on Sat May 30, 2009 1:54 pm

Hi, since the garage has warmed up a bit I'm back to fiddling with my pet, just about to start rebuilding my forks, should I take them to someone with the correct tool to push the seals in? Don't want to ruin them trying to do it myself, or am I being over protective? Anyway, while the forks are off it wouldn't be such a bad idea that I respray my steering head, but to put it back on (got all new bearings and racers etc) is it a wildly frustrating job with all the individual bearings, would be best to keep my sanity and let the paid mechanics do it? If I have nice shiny clean forks and fresh paint on the steering head, it would be silly not to tart up the clocks as well (you know how one quick simple job has a knock on effect), will the cases come apart? The chrome bases are off but I can't get the bottom with the thin chrome rim to budge off the black case, am I just being feeble? Yes I am a girl, not just a bloke acting like one.

Would much appreciate you advice.

Ball bearings are dead easy, just use some grease to stick them in where you need them (like peas on a knife you know), gum them on the bottom race of each pair.

With a little ignorance (seein as brute force is probably not your thing) seals can be pressed home in the garage, it helps if you have a vice or a gullible mate to hold things.

Piece of soft wood on top of the seal, light taps with a nammer to get it started and get it even, then more and more harder taps to keep it moving, while checking it stays (fairly) level, then to get it inside the fork leg (or holder) use the old seal on top, this can then be prised out again once the new seal is fully home.

I couldn't see how to strip my 550/4 clox so I used some satin black smoothrite... mm I have pictures somewhere?

not the brilliant shot I thought it was..

A large socket can be used to knock the new seals in. Lubricate the lips of the seals prior to pushing the stanchions back in.
