550/4 the engine

Postby mike550/4 on Wed Jul 09, 2008 9:40 pm

hi guys

as some of you may know been stripping a 550, all thats left now is basically engine and wheels

right i am doing this for the first time , i have no previous experience, the engine has done 21 k , its been sat since 83, previous owner bit of a collector, apparently started it every now and again, thats all he would tell me, according to dvla its not been on road since 83 ,

the engine , my question is what to do , it turns over , has compression, what sort of rebuild to go for, what sort of engine rebuild/gasket set is needed, can you guys recommend anyone in northants area for rebuild, anyone on the site who does it?, what sort of cost am i likely to incurr, or should i be brave and give it a go ( give me a verbal kick in for last statement if you wish ;o) )

all help appreciated , while engine is getting built frame is to be stripped and powder coated

thanks

Mike.

It's mid-July. If you strip down the engine now you will miss the riding season completely (unless you're planning on doing this full-time?)

My suggestion would be a full tune up: new points, plugs, air filter, oil and oil filter. Adjust tappets.

See how it runs. Check for rattles, smoke etc and ride it.

If you have minor oil leaks (most do), then strip the engine over the winter. Start with the top end, gasket sets don't come cheap but you can still get most of the gaskets and oil seals from David Silver.

If you want to play, I have a 550 engine in my shed which is complete (no carbs). Let me know.

well bike is completely in parts, i am taking lessons at moment to get my full licence, i wAs into bikes 20 years ago but never got my full licence, plan is to rebuild this one and use it next year,

i would love to learn how to rebuild the engine, but where do you learn such a thing now, spare engine to fettle with sounds good, this one i have, i have not heard running, points and pretty much all ignition parts came in a box, no battery either, got the bike quite cheap , in no rush getting it in tip top condition, seals must be perished, weeping
around bottom of engine, but not one drop of oil has reached the ground

thanks for help steve been a great help, get in touch about the engine
