400a paint code

Postby hondaman303 on Sat May 23, 2009 3:41 pm

Can anyone please tell me the correct paint code (or where I might find it) for a 1980 CB400A ?
V5 has it as red, but its more orange (faded??)
Cheers, Adam.........

I seem to recall that the "red" CB400A was an orangey red colour.

From this website:
http://www.cmsnl.com/
I found some information which may help.

I know it's not what you have, but I've found a colour code for the England-spec, red CB400T, which is R-6C-S (Candy Antares Ted) which was a candy maroon, not bright red (to my eyes anyway). The CB250T was R33 (Helios Red) which was a solid, bright red colour.
I've also found a "red" colour code for the US-spec CB400A, and that is R-23 (Tahitian Red). No England-spec model is listed though, but it could well have been available in the same colours! The UK-spec CB400A was certainly a solid colour, not a metallic, which is what R23 appears to be.

Have a look here at the colour codes:
http://www.cmsnl.com/faq.php?fq_catid=14#15

There are other colours are listed as R23, but Tahitian Red is the only red among them. The other colour listed for the CB400A is PB3C-C, for which there is no red colour listed, that's why I reckon your colour is the R23 Tahitian Red.

if you use that website to look up the CB400A (and the CB400T/CB250T) and look for the fuel tank, you will find where I got those codes from. Hopefully you will come to the same conclusion!

Edit:
There's a couple of photos of a red (orange) one on here:
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ ... t%2078.htm

but I don't know what colour this one is:
http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Dir ... amatic.htm
It's more like the CB400T's red.

I'll go now..............

I do believe the red was more of a scarlet red but this will have definately faded over the years as red is one of the colours most prone to fading, certainly when celulose paint was used as is the case of your bike.

It is possible to bring the colour back a little but using cutting compound ..T-Cut have a special one for bring back colour but I have to admit I haven't tried it myself.

WOW! Red V Four, many thanks for such a wealth of information. I will certainly be following it up.

Witchmaster, thanks also for your assistance. I am afraid however, the paint on my current project is beyond the magic of T cut.
All the best.

Hi Adam,

Apologies that it's a little late, but I can confirm the information 'Red V Four' gave from the official Honda CB400A parts book.

The 400A was sold in three colours in GB - 'Tahitian Red' (code 'R-23', a bright scarletty-orangey red), 'Candy Antares Red' (code 'R-6C-S', a dark burgundy red) and 'Candy Sapphire Blue' (code 'PB-3C-C', a medium blue).

Hth.

Regards,
Stuart

Looks like mine was the Tahitian red, it was an orangey red as opposed to burgundy.
Thanks agin, Adam.......

I've aswell begin a "red" colour cipher for the US-spec CB400A, and that is R-23 (Tahitian Red). No England-spec archetypal is listed though, but it could able-bodied accept been accessible in the aforementioned colours! The UK-spec CB400A was absolutely a solid colour, not a metallic, which is what R23 appears to be.

I understand this bit, and it's basically what I said previously.
