I seem to recall that the "red" CB400A
was an orangey red colour.
From this website:
http://www.cmsnl.com/I found some information which may help.
I know it's not what you have, but I've found a colour code for the England-spec, red CB400T, which is R-6C-S (Candy Antares Ted) which was a candy maroon, not bright red (to my eyes anyway). The CB250T was R33 (Helios Red) which was a solid, bright red colour.
I've also found a "red" colour code for the US-spec CB400A, and that is R-23 (Tahitian Red). No England-spec model is listed though, but it could well have been available in the same colours! The UK-spec CB400A was certainly a solid colour, not a metallic, which is what R23 appears to be.
Have a look here at the colour codes:
http://www.cmsnl.com/faq.php?fq_catid=14#15There are other colours are listed as R23, but Tahitian Red is the only red among them. The other colour listed for the CB400A is PB3C-C, for which there is no red colour listed, that's why I reckon your colour is the R23 Tahitian Red.
if you use that website to look up the CB400A (and the CB400T/CB250T) and look for the fuel tank, you will find where I got those codes from. Hopefully you will come to the same conclusion!
Edit:
There's a couple of photos of a red (orange) one on here:
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/ ... t%2078.htmbut I don't know what colour this one is:
http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Dir ... amatic.htmIt's more like the CB400T's red.
I'll go now..............
