Any hints on looking after your bikes

VFR800 vtech headlights

Postby lovechildpisces on Mon Mar 24, 2008 5:21 pm

Im sure antyone who has the VFR model where the headlights come on automatically with the ignition are not happy about being nannied, so does anyone know a good way to revert to the good old days of independent thought ie using a different or auxilliary lighting set up.
Any comments welcomed

I think this has been discussed before in an earlier topic.

Personally it doesn't bother me as the first thing I do when I jump on a road bike is to switch the lights on if they don't come on automatically.

It would be possible to put a switch and relay in to have manual overide but it would involve additional wiring as well.

Thanks Chimpy, i tried looking in previous replies but couldnt find anything. I t doesnt really bother me but i would be concerned if my battery was weak and it was a cold cold morning.

Not sure about the vtec, but my Bandit and FJR both turn off the lights when I press the starter button. So power drain is minimised.

As to retrofitting a switch, it must be possible if you can get a 2000 model vtec handlebar switch, but is it worth it? Surely it's cheaper/easier just to buy an Optimate and keep the battery charged up.

I have a VFR and the lights are on automatically when you start the bike and also seem to be a high setting(despite the garage altering them) - cars always flash me at night! I suppose it is a safety thing ' be seen ' but I am not sure it is ideal. I have also had a flat battery a couple of times so now use Optimate all the time.

Erica ifyou need to adjust your headlights it is very easy to do. I just wondered if anyone had successfully altered their bikes so that it was possible to kill the headlights at will rather than be stuck with them on all the time. I dont use an optimate but just a standard battery charger and a timer so the bike gets 20 minutes charge every night, which seems to keep it ingood order for a lot less than the ridiculous optimate prices.
Anyway if anyone has done a conversion let me know please,
Good God I hate the nanny State.

Thanks for that, lovechildpisces - yes I I did have a go at adjusting my lights ( probably made them worse!) then went to Abingdon Motors and they got a couple of their mechanics to sit on the bike whilst they adjusted them down but I still get flashed! (ok ok no cheeky comments please! ) .............. and I must admit, was lucky with the Optimate - was given it as the guy had just (shock horror :o0 ) bought a BMW and it wouldn't fit - so it only cost me a pint!

Sorry cannot help re adjusting the control of the lights.
