Collector box repair

Postby protector on Sat May 30, 2009 8:18 pm

My friend recently bought a 56 plate Bandit 650. He rode up from North London to Newbury last weekend. We were going to go for a ride along some twisty roads.

As he pulled up outside, I could hear that his exhaust was blowing quite badly. On closer examination, the link pipe had corroded away and snapped right at the point it goes into the collector box. So a quick bodge, get you home type repair was done, via a trip to halfords.

So He ordered a new Link pipe and can. Today when he was trying to get the old bit of rusted link pipe out from the collector box, he found that the end of the collector box had corroded and had 2 lagre goles in it. It seems its the weld thats corroded away.

I heard that that this can actually be repaired. The old but os cut off and a new piece welded back on ?

Has anyone heard of this, or had it done ? Better yet, is there anywhere near Nebury or Reading that can do this type of repair?
I know its not a Honda problem, but I have let him feel the heated grips on my Blackbird, so he's an honoury member.

It's a common problem and not restricted to any particular make of machine. I've had it in the past and made some new collars and welded them on. Biggest problem often is sourcing the right size tubing.

The ends of the Exhaust Pipes which go into the collector box on my VFR750fk were corroded. As i wanted to keep the original Exhausts i took them to a local Welder who made up & welded new collars on, after spraying they look brand new. Give Bernie Andrews of Project Fabrications, Newbury. a bell on 0163548320.
