cb750 primary drive sprocket teeth

Postby ianS on Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:09 pm

I am rebuilding a 1974 cb750 K3. The primary cush drive (sits behind the clutch) sprocket teeth look a bit worn to me. In fact there is no land left at the tooth crown, they are pointed nut not hooked over. Is this normal for these bikes or do i need to get a replacement? if i need a replacement does anyone out there want to sell one?
Incidentally, thanks once again to Kev who sold me an oil pump for this project. it is now installed and all was going well till i hit this snag. My fault for not looking.
cheers

Replace it. It'll make short work of a new chain. If the rear is the same vintage the wear may not be as prominent due to more teeth. I'll bet your chain is pretty well shot. :o(

Are you refering to the main drive chain ? because I believe that Ians is refering to a sprocket that inside the crankcase and as he says behind the clutch refered to as the primary drive.

I personally dont exactly know how the teeth on this drive sprocket should look but considering the age of the bike they probably are worn.

is this the drive you are talking about? http://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb750-four-k3-us_model481/partslist/E++16.html

If there are visible signs of wear I would replace the sprocket and obviously the primary chain as well "IF" you can source replacement parts. I say if as they are difficult to obtain new and very expensive. Of course if the crankshaft sprocket is worn as well you will be looking at a new crank as well. The primary chain was changed to hy-vo type on the later fours and of course wet sump lubrication was introduced which helped longevity.

thanks for the response Gents. It's not the rear wheel drive chain i am referring to it is the primary chain running from the crank to the main shaft through the cush drive. The crank teeth are good its the cush drive teeth that look very pointy. I am going to buy a new set of primary chains but was wondering if anyone out there has a second hand primary cush drive they would like to sell ?
thanks

So I was correct in my asumption !!

Well CMSNL dont have one and if they did it would cost €474 which as you may well now know is not much different to pounds at the present exchange rate  ...at the present exchange rate it would be 429.12 pounds !!!

Good luck with your search
