nasty engine problem

Postby Jack on Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:21 pm

Hi everyone,

Alas my motorbike is very poorly, from bad to very very bad!

First it was carburettor problems now the engine has packed up.

It started to smoke a couple of weeks ago, from the colour of the smoke (a blue hue) a figured it was burning oil. I checked the level and it was low.
I was coming into Reading last Friday and it started losing power, it sounded rough. Five minutes later I got it to limp the final few metres into my garden.
I check the oil, nothing left, not registering on the dispstick, although ther oil pressure light didn't come on. It had done just over 200 miles since the top up!
It now makes a loud tapping noise and has very little power (I tested it after an oil top up)

I think it's over heated and the pistons have warped and may be more.

The question is: new engine from a breakers or do I get it reconditioned?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Jack

Sounds pretty serious.

The level of serious depends upon the bike though. What is it?

A 30 year old bike would be easy to recondition.
A 10 year old bike would probably need a replacement from a breakers.

Hi Jack

Sorry to hear of your engine problem.

To recondition a 750 DOHC four with new parts is quite expensive. I did it years ago on one of mine and it cost over £500 in parts alone. The problem is a 25 year old engine from the breakers may not be a lot better and even it's running now, it's life expectancey cannot be estimated.

If you decide to look at your engine you will learn a lot about it. It's possible it's lost a big end if the oil supply has been compromised but a piston (or two) may have picked up, which would explain the lack of power.

I've got quite a lot of engine parts for this model so if you get stuck shout.

Regards
