Checking oil level on a Shadow 750C8

Postby magpie1918 on Thu Aug 21, 2008 10:06 am

Folks,
I have just had the 600 mile service completed and have covered about 100 miles since. According to the handbook, the way to check the oil level is to run the engine for 2-3 minutes, turn off and then, keeping the bike level, wait another couple of minutes, then check. I did this and after about 3 minutes, checked the oil. It barely registered on the dipstick. I kept the bike level and after about 7 minutes, it registered just under half way on the stick. I am a bit concerned that there may not be sufficient oil in the engine? also, the handbook's instruction does seem a bit odd to me. Why do they advise to run the engine, why not put the bike on the level from cold and check? Should I add oil (10-40?) to bring it to the upper level/
I would very much appreciate any advice on this, and sorry for wafflling on!
The engine is a bit noisy, but has been from new, and I understand this is pretty normal?
Drives beautifully though! It's truly wonderful to be back riding after 18 years!
Best regards,
Craig

Standard type instructions, and not just Hondas. If you have just had it serviced take it back and get them to top it up. I always like to use the same make as well as grade of oil.

...Me too jimmyb! I always get them to add a sticker or write in in the service book what oil they have used. Notwithstanding, you can add similar viscosity and type (synthetic, mineral) but I believe that its still best to use the same one. :o)

...I also agree that it sounds like during the service insufficient oil was put in. Take it back and get them to sort it while you wait!! Flippin cheek if they failed to put sufficient in and you may wish to find another dealership! Let us know if you were 'short changed'!! :o)
Who Cares if it aint Broke!!..Fix it Anyway!!
