650 Vigor stalls when clutch pulled in at speed

Postby windmill john on Thu Jul 31, 2008 1:03 pm

Hi,
when I'm coming to a stop at most speeds, when I pull the clutch in to change down and sometimes when coming to a stop, the engine dies instantly.
It will start immediately every time by either letting the clutch out and bumping it, or hitting the starter button.
Originally I thought it was the contact on the stand, or even the electric contact on the clutch lever.
But, I'm wondering more if it could be the slow running circuit on the carb.
The engine can be cold or hot. It stops as is you have turned the key off.
I will check all ground contacts at the weekend.
Any suggestions
Cheers

Just to ask is the tickover set right. I am thinking you have slowed down and brought the bike to a halt when this stall occurs. It could just be that the engine briefly is not getting enough fuel. This is suggested by the restart working each time indicating something other than electrics.

Could possibly be a partially blocked vent in the tank causing a vacuum in the tank preventing the fuel flowing properly.

Try slackening the tank cap off and riding the bike to see if it goes away.

If it's still the same you can then discount it.

Cheers Guys,
I remember someone ages ago saying they had a similar problem and it was a bad connection near the ignition switch.
But, as this only happens more or less on the overrun, I do believe it's a bit of starvation and maybe some muck on the slow running side of the carb.
I'll check the cap and breather. Might be worth me whipping off the carb and giving it a good clean and blow.
For an air cooled single, there's quite a lot of crap around the carb, TPS, Pulse Secondary blah blah, heaters etc :|
Here goes; thanks again.

Hi John

I believe this bike has an "electronic" carb on it, which in the interests of economy, shuts off the fuel on the over run. When the revs get back to tick over the fuel should come back on. It sounds like there is problem with this function. It's a long while since I had an SLR650 (similar) and I didn't keep it long.

Thanks Chimpy,
You may be right; why put a bloomin TPS on a standard carb!! I know it's to do with timing, but even so!
I can find no info on how to tweak the TPS, so I see how I go with a clean.
You know, the other thing which might be causing the problem is the Secondary air blah blah. It feeds fresh air into the exhaust based on negative pressure in the intake?!
If that valve was faulty, then it is possible for a little extra air to enter the inlet stub, thereby weakening the mixture possibly just enough to stall it.
I did read somewhere, that someone had removed their Secondary system totally.
We'll see.
Cheers
