Where are you located?

Postby Red V Four on Fri Jun 12, 2009 11:16 am

Why is it that so many of the people who join this forum do not put where they are in the 'location' box of their profile?
It's not as if they are being asked to fill in their full name and address, is it?
We nearly all hide behind a made-up name anyway, so unless we let on or say so, no-one knows who we actually are.
If these forum members are also HOC members it could help to get them together, set up new branches or expand others, if they aren't already active in the club.
If they aren't HOC members, they could even be approached to see if they are interested in joining, especially as some forum members, amazingly, are not even aware of the HOC!

It's not just on here Red, I frequent a few forums and it's bleeding annoying when you reply to someone offering help, spares or wanting spares they are selling only to find that they live in Siberia or Outer Mongolia.

After being the subject of identity theft and subsequently accussed of fraud I was very reluctant to publish any information about myself on line for a long time. I'm still not totally happy with security on line and would never use any online banking system.

I have been the subject of Identity theft twice but unfortunately it isn't just online. Once my Egg card was ripped off after I used it on a supposedly secure site to buy something. The second time my debit card was cloned probably at a petrol station in this area.

Mind you it only took me 2 seconds to find out your actual name :)

To be quite honest I never gave a thought to "Itentity Theft" when I answered earlier on this topic :o? but it has made me think :!:
However I have always been wary of internet fraud although in this day and age we seem to get pushed more and more into using the internet which I do try to avoid if at all possible. These days it is becoming harder to avoid, certainly when living in a place like I do, although I make a point of trying to shop locally and only use the internet as a last resort but this has not much to do with fear of Identity Theft and is more that I would prefer to support local trade where ever possible.
Maybe its time to rethink and try even more to avoid using the internet.

My son was the victim of identity theft once . He got it all sorted out in the end but it left scars.I am very careful myself most of the time but probably not careful enough.
It´s a shame though that you can´t trust people around you. :o(

I went on an Internet Security course and it was quite worrying to be honest.

Probably good to know what can be or is done regarding security breeches but at the same time i can imagine it is worrying and some times better not to know

I dont think putting your town on here can be likened to credit card fraud. I've had some undesirable debits on my card before, and yes i think we should be on our guard watching out for the muppets that think its ok to take other ppl's money.
The internets pro's certainly outweigh its con's, and i for one don't want to go back to relying on a pigeon,or talking to someone thru 2 paper cups and a bit of tight string. :o))
As far as i know, tho, they cant clone me for typing Oxford in the box. ( maybe i'll change it to Scotland, that'll throw them! )

Gazza

You´re certainly right there, Gazza ......although the idea of sending pigeons seems quite attractive to me. :o)) [smilie=a_movinggreen.gif] . Even the two paper cups on a piece of string would make the whole conversation thing much more cosy, don´t you think ? 8)

But of course fraud can happen to you on your doorstep - if you´re not careful they get you anyway. I still hate the idea os sharing this planet with a lot of morons who have the intelligence of a slug - and no respect for other people. :o(
