E-PETITION

Postby gonzocbr on Wed Aug 20, 2008 4:57 pm

Think this effects most if not all of us, so please sign it. It concerns the governments threats to back date car tax increases to 2001.

I'm in favour of the so-called 'back-dating', gas-guzzlers should pay much more road tax regardless of how old they are. Who, knows, maybe it would get more people out of their Range Rovers and onto two wheels!

I just sold my 2002 Dodge in anicipation of being clobbered sooner or later; luckily it was lhd so I was able to sell it overseas where they don't have the same taxation worries, thanks to governments choosing what they thinmk matters when it comes to climate change....

It's not a threat. It will happen regardless of what anybody says.

Does that mean you won't mind if they chase you up for when you had your very own gas guzzler in the applicable years then ? ;) :P

The backdating will only apply to vehicles registered after 2001.

The new rate will be applied when a new VEL is obtained after the scheme begins and it will be paid by the current owner at that time.

Previous owners will not be liable as they paid the current VEL that was in force whilst they owned the vehicle.

It's not going to happen till next year so there's still time to sell your gas guzzler if you can find anyone to buy it.

Do any of the on line petitions work? If the goverment want to do something they will - regardless.
I have signed loads of these petitions and none have made any difference to the outcome.

No Jimmy they don't work.

A government would never take any notice of these petitions, a sure sign of weakness if they did and it would set a precident.

That's right Chimpy.

Consultation is just a word bandied about by politicians.

What it really means is "we'll pretend to listen to you but this is what's going to happen."

The thing about petitions is that it at least makes you feel like you have spoken up.

A bit like going on a demonstration about something you feel very strongly about - it's your opportunity to actually show that you care and how you feel about it. A kind of 'voting with your feet'.

I never expect petitions/demonstrations to make a difference, however, I always have the hope that one day they just might... :o))
