Do classics hold they're price?

Postby honda cb650 on Mon Jun 22, 2009 7:23 pm

I'm thinking of selling my cherished CB650 due to other commitments. It's pretty tidy even though I do say so myself but I'm in a quandary as to what to ask for it as I've spent a load on it which I don't expect to get back, would I be asking to much to ask what I paid for it 15 years ago? £1600???Mods this isn't an add yet ;o) Membership number 17747
Thanks in advance CB

Prices of old bikes are very subjective and it all depends on whether or not somebody wants your bike at the particular time. I've seen old bikes advertised for months in dealers listings (obviously commission sales) for what I would have said was stupid money and then suddenly they've gone. I guess it all boils down to how long you are prepared to wait and how much you want to spend advertising her.

But sometimes the owner takes them back as they haven't sold and they don't want to reduce the price, or the dealer needs the space for something else that will sell.

At the moment, Classic bike prices seem to be holding their own or increasing, a theory around the Kwack sites is that people are investing rather than giving their money to the banks.
Last couple of years, a pristine H2 triple hovered around 9k now the top price is nearer 11k. I had to increase the insurance on my little bike this year.

It also depends greatly on the rarity of your bike of course, a good guide is to search Ebay see if any are going on there and how much, then set your price accordingly.

Good luck with it, whatever.

Not sure what they are like across the pond, but here in the states, prices have been going up depending on the model of the bike, condition, and year. I watched a 100% Original 1974 Honda CB750 K4 with 497 miles go for $15k usd. My frame off restored K4 is currently valued at 11K usd. These sold for less than 2k in 74. A 1969 Sandcast 750 K0 in perfect condition will go for $30-40K usd. So you tell me....

Well it really does depend on the bike and what you have quoted are definitely sought after machines.

Don't know if it makes any difference but it is insured for £2000 agreed with Carol Nash.
